Character Analysis

From the years 1979 to 2005, the idea that Michael Jackson was interesting before his death revealed that the celebrity had multiple cosmetic transformations throughout his lifetime. In a 2003 documentary with Martin Bashir, Michael Jackson confessed to only having a nose job. “I’ve had no plastic surgery on my face, just my nose,” he said. Michael Jackson also made it clear that he “got the surgery not because he wanted a smaller nose, but because I broke it during a dance rehearsal and needed an operation” (White 1). But this wasn't the end of his amazing transformation, this was just the beginning.

Throughout Michael Jackson's career, his typical beautiful brown skin transfigures to a pale white. While conspiracy theorists ponder that Michael Jackson had bleached his skin to fit into society and to be accepted. But his lighter skin was because of a skin condition called vitiligo. Vitiligo is a condition in which the pigment is lost from areas of the skin, causing whitish patches, often with no clear cause. By 1986, Michael Jackson’s skin was completely white, and had just got his second nose job. Because he wasn't pleased with the way he looked, he corrected it to his likings; at this point, he was at his peak, having surgeries continuously.

In 2015, a documentary called “The 10 Faces Of Michael Jackson”, claimed “he had more than 100 procedures done on his face and hair”, and according to Dr. Goodstein, he “had multiple nose jobs, cheek implants and he had a cleft put in his chin. He also had eyelid surgery … You name it, he had it” ( White 8). Dr Goodstein had also performed cosmetic surgeries on him. One of Jackson’s friends had stated in an interview that Michael Jackson actually confessed to “getting all of his surgeries to not look like his father” (White 7.); Joe Jackson, anymore. Michael Jackson wanted to create an image for himself. As well as trying to create an image for himself, Jackson was a groovy individual. Michael Jackson was one of the youngest children of the family, as he had six older siblings and only two younger siblings.

In 1963, The Jackson brothers were formed, featuring Michael Jackson's older brothers, Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine. At first, the Jackson family performers consisted of Jackson's older brothers, then Michael Jackson joined his siblings when he was five years old and emerged as the group's lead vocalist. By 1966, Joe added Marlon and renamed the group ‘Jackson 5’. The group was outstandingly managed by their father. Joe managed his children’s early careers, but he became infamous for his treatment of them. Some of his children claimed “he had been abusive and domineering in his dealings with the boy band” (Bertram 1). Michael opened up about this abuse in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, saying: “If you didn’t do it the right way, he would tear you up, really get you.” But, despite these allegations, Michael forgave his father and they went on multiple tours and even sold over 100 million records worldwide. But that only lasted so long when their father started stepping back from managing them and the brothers started going solo.

The band started slowly breaking apart, and in December 1984, Michael Jackson announced “he was leaving the band after their performance at the Dodger Stadium” (Desborough 1). In 1983, Jackson was a Broadway dancer and his performances were well-rehearsed. Jackson spent hours practicing his dances and singing in the studio. Michael Jackson has also credited the “Godfather of Soul '' James brown as his major influence, and that's where Michael learned some of his moves. In the 1970’s, Michael Jackson learned to moonwalk from a couple of his friends, and he worked on it in the studio. He also created the “robot dance” in 1974, which amazed millions across the world on live TV, but Jackson wasn't too sure about the dance. Michael Jackson set and broke records throughout his entire career. He became the biggest selling artist of all time, with 380 million records sold. His song “Thriller,” still holds the record, to this day, for most copies of a single sold--110 million. Michael Jackson changed the music industry and the promotion of music in African American males in history. This is how he got his name “King of pop” (Hughes 1).
